Cares initiatives

Reed employees have chosen to support the development of programmes of a number of associations :

Roseau
At the teaching hospital in Reims, France, the volunteer members of the Roseau association entertain some one hundred children with leukaemia or other types of cancer every afternoon, with activities, stories, games and parties. The association also helps young patients and their families strengthen family ties and develop relations with the outside world during and after treatment. Funds collected by Reed are used to buy televisions, videocassette recorders, game consoles, computers and magazine subscriptions. The association also helps make hospitalised children’s dreams come true.

Abaquar
Abaquar is a Franco-Brazilian non-governmental organisation that was founded in 2003 to help children and teenagers in extreme poverty regain their dignity, autonomy and hope through fun, yet educational activities. The association evaluates, finances and manages “learning houses” for street children. Abaquar has been developing its expertise in Rio de Janeiro since July 2006 in a project that combines education, environmental protection and social development. Reed helped the association gain greater visibility and make numerous contacts by providing a booth at the Pollutec show in 2007. Abaquar receives financial support from several Reed subsidiaries, as well as a scholarship funded by Reed Elsevier.

Les Bouchons d'amour
Les Bouchons d’amour collects and recycles plastic bottle caps to raise funds for the disabled. The association uses the fund to buy wheelchairs and other equipment, support the French Handisport Federation and finance an orphanage in Madagascar. Reed contributes by recycling caps from water, soda and milk bottles inside the company.

Several shows have also forged partnerships with associations involved in closely related activities :

Paris Book Show
The comics section of the Paris Book Show launched its renowned “Bulles d’Emotions” initiative in 2004 in partnership with the Angoulême International Comics Festival. Original drawings by 12 artists are auctioned on ebay.fr; the proceeds from the sale of reproductions were donated to the Gustave Roussy institute of oncology in 2006 and to France’s Secours Populaire association in 2007 to develop and expand children’s libraries.

Les Journées Internationales de Biologie (JIB)
Under the impetus of Syndicat des Biologistes chairman Jean Benoît, the JIB scientific congress has spotlighted humanitarian projects led by biologists, lab technicians and diagnostics manufacturers for the past three years. This year, Biologie sans Frontières shared a humanitarian booth with Dr. Gaulier’s Pathology-Cytology-Development association for free. This gave the associations the opportunity to advertise their activities, recruit new members, collect second-hand equipment, promote the idea of North/South sponsorship and make contacts with many potential partners.

Pollutec
Pollutec offered Reed partner Abaquar a booth at its December 2006 show so that the Franco-Brazilian association could present its activities in Rio de Janeiro’s shantytowns to environmental organisations.
